Thorp Father of Card Counting

Dr. Edward Thorp a Chicago native and was born on August 14, 1932. Thorp finished a master degree in Physics and was confirmed a Doctors degree in Math at University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). Have his first work experience at M.I.T. from 1958 to 1961. A Math professor at UC Irvine from 1965 to 1977 and then taught Quantitative Finance at the same university from 1977 to 1982.

Thorp became famous for his 1962 book "Beat the Dealer" that proved using mathematical computations card reading can beat blackjack. A statistics journal article had caught Thorp's curiosity that led to deeper systematic study of blackjack. He develops a system known as card counting by painstakingly studying cards variations after successive dealing. This system shows how the house advantage be shift to a minimal edge. By counting the cards dealt, Thorp came up with a guess what are the remaining cards in the deck. Thorp' "ten count system" was finally unveiled in this book. It is a tutorial that taught a step by step instructions on how establish certain advantages in playing blackjack.

Together with a Manny Kimmel a friend and a known toughie, Thorp put the system to an initial test and it was proven successful. He won $11,000 in a single week. Thorp became a midnight celebrity and gamblers from neighboring communities soon sought him. In 19962, Thorp published his first book "Beat the Dealer" became a New York bestseller that sold 700,000 plus copies. John Scarne, a known critic of Thorp's in his autobiography Scarne cited that Thorp' system still gave the house a slight advantage. To discredit Thorp Scarne and The Sands Hotel and Casino in a press release challenged Thorp to a blackjack game which Thorp politely refused.

Thorp a talented mathematicians using expertise of probability and Statistics focus his attention on stock market and in 1967 publish another book "Beat the Market". Thorp a Math genius now then focus his attention to Stock Market In collaboration with J Renan, the two put a system that can read and somehow manipulate stock market trends and activities.

Much of Thorp fortune came from the success of his two books and investments in stock market playing. He was inducted to Blackjack Hall of Fame. Other included in the list are: Al Francesco, Peter Griffin, Arnold Snyder, Ken Uston, Stanford Wong, Tommy Hyland, Max Rubin, Keith Taft, Julian Braun, Lawrence Revere, James Grosjean and James Mcdermott.
